It's been 10 months since Humans last aired on Channel 4 and AMC – now, we have an update on the show's future... and it's not good news.

Series co-creator Sam Vincent has confirmed on Twitter that the sci-fi series will not be returning for a fourth series.

In a statement credited to Vincent and fellow writer/executive producer Jonathan Brackley, the pair said they were "gutted" but added they felt "lucky" to have made three series, calling Channel 4 and AMC "the perfect partners".

They also thanked fans for their support, and acknowledged that series three's cliffhanger ending "left some threads hanging".

"Maybe one day we'll get a chance to pick them back up," the statement reads. "If there's anyone out there with a few million quid and an interest in AI stories, we're all ears. DM us Elon."

Humans was set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a 'Synth' – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar in appearance to human beings.

The third series ended with the shock demise of Mia (Gemma Chan) leaving Niska (Emily Berrington) as the de-facto leader of the Synths. Niska, though, had evolved to reach a new stage in Synth evolution, while Mattie (Lucy Carless) was revealed to be pregnant with Leo (Colin Morgan)'s child – a human / Synth hybrid.

Last year, Vincent and Brackley told Digital Spy that they had some idea of where the story would go next for a possible season 4.

"We definitely have a story to tell, if we're lucky enough to get a fourth series," Brackley said, while Vincent added, "We're excited about the ideas that we have, so we just have to hope, really, and do our best to communicate those ideas to the powers that be."

Based on the Swedish science-fiction drama Real Humans, Humans also starred Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, and Ivanno Jeremiah.
