Hummus Cafe In Israel Gives 50 Per Cent Off To Jews And Arabs Who Dine Together

A hummus cafe in Israel is offering 50 per cent off its dishes to Jews and Arabs who sit and eat together.

The move by the restaurant follows the escalating violence in the country in recent weeks. Forty-four Palestinians and seven Jews have died so far this month following a spate of stabbings and a handful of gun attacks.

The Hummus Bar’s owner, Kobi Tzafrir, who has described the move as a resounding success since its introduction last week, said it was a small step to bring people together.

Posting on Facebook, originally in Hebrew, the restaurant said: “Scared of Arabs? Scared of Jews? By us we don’t have Arabs! But we also don’t have Jews… By us we’ve got human beings!”

“And real excellent Arab hummus! And great Jewish falafel! And a free refill for every serving of hummus, whether you’re Arab, Jewish, Christian, Indian, etc.”

The Hummus Bar in the small town of Kfar Vitkin, near the coastal city of Netanya, has seen business up since the move.

The Facebook message, although a small gesture, was met with wide applause. It has more than 4,000 ‘Likes’ and has been shared 1,200 times.

Writing below the original post, Facebook user Mieer Darwesh said: “Lovely idea, wish there were more of these kind of initiations amongst us!”

Mohamed El-khateeb added: “A beautiful post that made my day, even though I’m thousands of miles away. Thank you!”

Celeste Regal said: “The food looks delicious, the sentiment brave & wonderful.”

Speaking to the Times of Israel, Tzafrir added succinctly: “If there’s anything that can bring together these peoples, it’s hummus.”
