Husband who allegedly murdered wife in honour killing could be coming to UK

An MP has written to the prime minister of Pakistan after hearing that the former husband and alleged murderer of Samia Shahid may be seeking entry into Britain.

Bradford MP Naz Shah said it was her understanding that Muhammad Shakeel had a new British wife and is planning to come to the UK.

He is still on bail as his alleged “honour killing” case had not gone to trial three years on.

Ms Shah said it was a "very worrying and very alarming" situation.

She said the alleged murder happened three years ago last week and she hoped that the home secretary would block Shakeel's entry to the UK.

Ms Shahid, 28, from Manningham, Bradford, died in Pakistan in July 2016 after travelling to visit her father, whom she had been told was seriously ill.

Samia Shahid's family had arranged her marriage to her first cousin, Mohammed Shakeel in February 2012 in Jhelum, in the Northern Punjab.

She later obtained a divorce under Shariah law, then married her true love Syed Mukhtar Kazim in Leeds, and moved to Dubai to live with him.

In July 2016, Samia Shahid received a telephone call, claiming that her father was critically ill in Pakistan.

In order to visit her father, Samia flew to Islamabad airport against the advice of her husband, who believed that the call was a lie because Samia's family felt a furious sense of shame towards their daughter for divorcing her first husband.

Samia was found dead in her cousin's home in Punjab, Pakistan, on July 20 2016, six days after landing in Pakistan.

Pakistan police launched a murder investigation, after it was originally suggested Samia had died of natural causes.

Mukhtar Kazim claims Samia was murdered by her family because they rejected their marriage.

On the basis of his complaint, Samia's father, Muhammad Shahid, and Shakeel were arrested by Jhelum police and sent to jail on remand.

On August 14 2016, police stated that Shakeel confessed to strangling Shahid.

In the letter to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, Naz Shah MP wrote: “Samia was raped and murdered in an alleged honour crime three years ago.

"Despite the accused having spent two years in custody and subsequently being released on bail, the case has faced significant delay and sadly for the victim’s husband the justice and closure that is desperately needed is being denied.

“I am further being led to believe that Mohammad Shakeel (ex-husband), who remains on bail for the rape and murder of Samia Shahid is seeking to enter the UK having married another British citizen.

“Whilst no justice has been provided and no trial has taken place, this news is extremely worrying and potentially dangerous.”

She added that "justice delayed is justice denied" and called for personal assurances from the Prime Minister that there is no undue influence delaying this case.

Ms Shah has sent copies of the letter to the Home Secretary Priti Patel and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab urging them to make representation to their counterparts in Pakistan concerning this matter.

Samia's family has always strongly denied any involvement in her death.
