BBC newsreader Huw Edwards dismisses claims he 'chased burglar out of his house'

Huw Edwards has denied claims that he chased a burglar out of his house on to the street.

According to reports, the BBC newsreader was said to have confronted the intruder when he was woken up at 5.30 in the morning.

Following the break in, the burglar made off in Edwards’ car.

Explaining what happened when the criminal had broken into the home he shares with wife Vicky, a source reportedly told The Sun: “Huw bravely ran out of the house after the burglar, but he was a whisker too late.

“He saw the criminal driving off in the car and trudged back to the house. He put it down to one of those things which happen when you live in a city.’’

However, Edwards has since set the record straight by insisting that he didn’t chase the burglar out of his house.

In a series of tweets, the journalist and broadcaster said: “Just for the record — following some misleading (shock!) press reports.

“Yes we had a burglary. No, I didn’t chase the burglar. The police are dealing with it. It happened a month ago. We’re all fine. Now back to more important things. Like Wales winning the Rugby World Cup.”

Fans were quick to share their relief over the news that no one was harmed during the incident.

‘Glad to hear all is ok. Hope the cops find the culprits,” wrote one.

While another commented: “Glad you’re all ok.”

Police confirmed that an investigation was under way.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “All lines of inquiry are being pursued. No arrest has been made at this stage.

“Police were called on September 16 to a report of a burglary, and that a Mercedes had been stolen. There was no reported injury.”
