Huw Edwards was the BBC's flagship presenter who led the coverage of major political and royal events before he announced that he would resign from the corporation. Several names have been floated as potential successors to the high-flying broadcaster, who was suspended last year amid allegations of paying a young individual for explicit photos.

he BBC later apologised to the teen's family for the way the complaint was handled and said safeguards need to be "enhanced" in order to allow complaints to be "escalated and managed" more effectively going forward. It apologised for not escalating the complaint to senior management more quickly.

Edwards, the host of BBC News at Ten, has led coverage of numerous Royal occasions, including the death and funeral of the late Queen in 2022 and the coronation of the King in May the same year. He also took the reins as the main presenter for BBC Election 2019, succeeding David Dimbleby.

The BBC has yet to reveal their line-up for the upcoming General Election. Here's a look at some possible replacements for Mr Edwards:

Clive Myrie

BBC newsreader Clive Myrie, who has been presenting News At Ten for several years, is one potential candidate. He has also hosted other BBC shows, including the popular quiz show Mastermind.

Myrie took charge of the BBC Proms coverage last year when Edwards was off-air and is part of the rotating team of presenters on News At Ten.

Sophie Raworth

Sophie Raworth temporarily took over as presenter of BBC One's flagship Sunday morning programme after Andrew Marr left the BBC, before Laura Kuenssberg stepped into the role.

Raworth is a key presenter of BBC News At Six and Ten, a position she has held since 2003.

Sophie Raworth has been a familiar face on BBC, contributing to election night coverage, Watchdog, Crimewatch, and the Chelsea Flower Show. She notably hosted 'Our Next Prime Minister' during the contest between Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak for leadership at Number 10.

Fiona Bruce

Fiona Bruce succeeded David Dimbleby as the host of BBC's flagship talk show 'Question Time' in 2019, after his 25-year tenure. Bruce is also known for her work on 'BBC News At Six', 'News At Ten', and has previously presented 'Crimewatch'.

Additionally, she fronts 'Antiques Roadshow' and 'Fake Or Fortune?

Kirsty Wark

Kirsty Wark, the longest-serving presenter of 'Newsnight', announced her departure from the programme following the General Election last year. The Scottish journalist, who has been with the show since 1993, will continue to present other BBC programmes including 'The Reunion' and 'Start The Week' on Radio 4.

Victoria Derbyshire

Victoria Derbyshire has helmed major BBC shows such as 'Newsnight' and 'Panorama', and had her own current affairs programme. When news broke that her eponymous BBC Two show might be cancelled, she expressed being "absolutely devastated".

Derbyshire reached a new fan base when she appeared on ' I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! ' in 2020.

Nicky Campbell

Nicky Campbell was at the forefront of broadcasting the first King's Speech in over seven decades this past November, stepping in as anchor after Huw Edwards was suspended from the BBC.

Campbell, a presenter for BBC Radio 5 Live, has also hosted BBC programmes such as Watchdog and Panorama, in addition to leading the ITV documentary Manhunt: The Raul Moat Story.
