‘I can confirm that this is being looked into, but no decision has been made,’ the spokesman said.

The company, which employs more than 20,000 people, owns the European trademark for the name, something which is causing consternation in the tiny northern European country.

Reykjavik claims the trademark is stopping it promoting their own goods across Europe.

‘Over the course of the years they (the shop) have been registering the name in several other categories and companies that have Iceland in the name, they have been objecting to them using the word Iceland in their names and logos,’ said Jon Asbergsson, head of an agency called Promote Iceland (the country).

But before you start worrying about a new cold war descending on Europe, the supermarket says it was not aware there was a problem.

‘We are not aware that our use of the Iceland name has ever caused any confusion with the country,’ said a spokesman.
