Sunday night's episode showed campmates on the ITV show being told that the public had been voting for who they wanted to see as camp leader, and that Hancock and Mike Tindall had got the most votes.
They were then asked to choose deputies - with Hancock going for Charlene White and Tindall opting for Sue Cleaver - and were made to take on a challenge in their teams of two with the winner being crowned leader.
Even though White managed to misdirect Hancock in the trial, he still won and took his place on the camp throne as Cleaver noted: "We now have a dictatorship, with Tindall adding: "But there’s always time for revolution."
Despite viewers having been directly responsible for putting disgraced former health secretary Hancock in the running for leader, many of them tweeted in disbelief that he was in charge.
One person tweeted: "WHYS MATT CAMP LEADER THEN??? once more proving the british public should not be trusted with ANY vote never mind in general elections."

Someone else wrote: "Guys why have we let matt become leader?? Enough is enough."
Another person commented: "Matt Hancock being leader? Wtf were you guys thinking?"
Someone else added: "matt is camp leader i’m never forgiving y’all for this."
Others speculated that viewers might have misunderstood the question and though they were voting Hancock into another trial.
Someone tweeted: "Did the fans accidentally vote for Matt to be leader thinking they were voting him for a trial?"
Another viewer wrote: "WHO VOTED MATT HANCOCK TO BE CAMP LEADER ??? I THOUGHT WE WERE VOTING TO PUNISH HIM"
Journalist Kevin Maguire optimistically tweeted: "Matt Hancock camp leader will be his undoing. I hope."
Another viewer shared a photo of campmate Jill Scott and asked: "Someone explain why Matt was voted as a potential camp leader when you have this lady?"
One viewer had joked: "If Matt ends up as camp leader they’ll be in a bloody lockdown by Tuesday and a recession by Wednesday!!!"
Viewers began adding to the growing chorus of people saying they were switching off over Hancock being on the show.
One person tweeted: "I was gonna catch up on #ImACeleb but my timeline informs me Matt Hancock is camp leader so I think I’m just about done with it now. Are people REALLY that thick?
"I physically cannot comprehend how that piece of s*** spends less than a week playing the victim on a reality tv show and the public all rush to feel sorry for him. I despair, truly I do."
I'm A Celebrity continues tonight at 9pm on ITV.
