'I'm from Lancashire - I tried the Huddersfield ice cream parlour locals rave about but I'd never heard of'

Ever since I moved to Huddersfield I've heard people banging on about Dixons Milk Ice's - being from Lancashire its a "phenomenon" I've never come across.

However, I'm yet to meet a Huddersfield local who doesn't mention it. Sure I'm here for an ice cream on a hot day but you guys are really passionate about it aren't you?

The heatwave has arrived in style this week and so cold refreshing stuff is top of the list of many people in Yorkshire.

Ice Cream is the perfect way to help you cool down in the high temperatures and judging by the sheer volume of people that queue for it on a hot day, order it online and leave glowing reviews, Dixons is the place to go.

It seems to be common knowledge that the best of the best is not the one you will find in the supermarket - the title usually goes to the "family-owned" local businesses and there's no denying that Dixons's Milk Ices is the County's favourite.

For those (like myself) who don't know - Dixons Milk ices was started in August 1961 when Edward Dixon acquired it from Earnest Rhodes and named it after himself.

Those that have tried Dixons ice cream say it tastes "different". They say it has a flavour of its own that can't be found anywhere else.

A spokesperson for Dixons said their uniqueness is something everyone has tried to copy at some point, saying: "Many have tried to replicate our product and rumours have been many through the years about the ingredients we use to produce this much sought after milk ice.

"Some have even romanticised as to what it contains, to the point of it becoming a mystery many would love to solve, I can confidently assure you the mystery will remain for many more years to come. One little secret I can let out of the bag is that we use fresh milk from locally sourced farms, there are no artificial additives’ or stabilisers and it is made fresh every day, for your enjoyment."

On TripAdvisor, Dixons sits on a staggering 5 stars. 483 people have reviewed, meaning its place is solid. it was even given the Trip Advisor People's Choice Award for 2022.

Reviewer Steven B penned: "If you want the best ice cream in Yorkshire visit Dixons Lockwood or Leeds Road", @KingCrossTracker said: "Went for the first time today with my partner who used to live in Huddersfield and get Dixon's regularly. The milky ice cream in a waffle cone was 10 out of 10!"

Whilst @JanetMaude07 agreed: "Called in for an ice cream - first time in a few years. The young man serving us was very polite. Best ice cream ever- it won’t be long before we go back." And @Foodie wrote: "Best ice cream I have ever eaten. Whenever I visit my family, I bring a 2 litre tub back to London with me! My Fiance is hooked too!"

I'd heard enough, it was time for me to try it for myself and see what the fuss was all about. It was a hot day and so given what I'd heard online I was expecting to queue, so I was pleasantly surprised when I turned up to the Lockwood shop to find it was fairly quiet, there was only one person ahead of me.

I was surprised by the amount of flavours and different options available, I had presumed there was just one flavour and that was it, but there was everything from mint choc chip, chocolate muddy fudge, cinder toffee and strawberry mallow to blackcurrant and liqurice and pistachio. They even have vegan options if thats your thing.

I could have gone for so many but seen as though it was my first time I decided it made sense to try the original flavour so I could really "taste the difference."

I ordered a small tub of original which cost me £2.00, I thought the price seemed fairly reasonable and in line with what you would pay elsewhere. What happened next, however, blew my tiny Lancashire mind.

The very lovely lady serving me asked "do you want juice?", I presumed she was asking me if I wanted to purchase a drink and replied "just the ice cream thank you". Clearly realising that I had no idea what she meant she held up a bottle of what I would describe as raspberry sauce and said again "juice?"

Baffled but intrigued, I responded "yes please", in what world is sauce called juice please? Yet another strange thing that Yorkshire folk say that makes zero sense to anyone else to add to my ever growing list - see here.

She then offered me a flake, a fudge stick and a wafer, I took them all, you know, to be polite.

Off I went back to my car armed with the goods, I went in for the taste test and oh my good lord, that really is something else isn't it?

I can't quite describe what the flavour is, it's almost like a sweet condensed milk, the texture again is really hard to descibe but it's to die for and the "juice" accompanies the flavour perfectly.

I often think Yorkshire folk are overly complimentary about their home- grown products like Henderson's Relish for example...vile. I'm convinced everyone pretends they like it purely because it's made in Yorkshire, awful stuff. But Dixon's I'm whole heartedly in agreement with.

I enjoyed it so much that I went back in and got a large takeaway pot to eat at home. I can't wait to go back again and try some of the other flavours, but are any of them as good?!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip to Dixon's and I can confirm that Dixons Milk ices really is the best ice cream shop in Huddersfield.
