North Wales Police have been largely met with praise from North Wales Live readers, for their recent initiative to crack down on drivers who shouldn't be behind the wheel. The operation was designed to enhance road safety, and identified and removed drivers whose vision impairment posed a risk.

During the operation, officers pulled over motorists, engaged in conversation, and conducted on-the-spot eyesight tests. Three individuals failed these tests, resulting in the immediate revocation of their driving licences.

This action led to debate on social media, with some users decrying the move as a "waste of time" and a "money-making scheme". Many others supported the work.

One of our readers Nobbysnutz said: "No problem with this. When you sign your driving licence you are making a declaration that you will abide by the Road Traffic Act in force at the material time including be fit and without impairment. Your responsibility to do this. I imagine anyone complaining would be up in arms if someone in an unroadworthy vehicle or with poor eyesight was to injure or kill a family member. Carry on is my vote."

While Flash74 added: "After noticing a deterioration in my 74 year old mother's driving, I suggested a visit to the optician. It turns out she had cataracts and was not fit to drive. She was determined to carry on until the family threatened to report her. We made sure she had access to transport, and she is having her cataracts removed later this week. If she had injured someone whilst driving, it would have been awful. If she had done so after knowing her eyesight was bad, it would have been unforgivable. Eye tests should be compulsory once a certain age is reached as a requirement for having a driving licence."

Specialist joined in with: "They should add a yearly eye test to law. A car has to have a mot to ensure it's safe to be driven, so why not the driver too. Could be conducted as part of a mot test, will take seconds to verify."

Pcplod asked: "Could the police please come to Tyn Y Groes in the Conwy valley and do these checks. Most of the drivers speeding through the village were unable to read the speed restriction signs and we're not adhering to the limit."

_566 added: "Well done to the Police. I can only guess that more drivers need to be stopped if they took 3 out of 100+ off the road. Good response with humour to the naysayers. I'm off to Specsavers."

Alldaylong said: "I'm all in favour of Police carrying out these type of checks. The number of drivers that pull out right in front of us at junctions and roundabouts is just crazy." As well as Daffyddthomas who added: "Good, well done to the police."

Vaux08hall said: "All drivers should have to have an eye test every 2 years it's as important as good brakes and steering in stopping accidents."

Jimcat said: "Police catching Rapists and Burglars? That takes effort! Pulling over drivers is the easy option. Same with dealing with the feral youth gangs. Too much effort, they don't even get out of their cars anymore."

Li32 replied: "Wouldn’t be saying that if you or a loved one were killed or injured by someone who couldn’t see!."

MickHookem agreed: "So if one of your relatives was killed by a driver who was as blind as a bat you wouldn't blame the police for not doing their jobs? You'd be the first to blame them."

Jonesey1 asked for more to be done: "They need to start testing drivers’ eyesight in Wrexham’s hinterland. Twice this very afternoon drivers have pulled out of side roads right in front of me …. luckily I was on the ball and managed to swerve (1st one) and stop (2nd one). Both had the good grace to reverse and wave their apologies but I think if it’d been either of those two drivers pulling out in front of the other it would’ve been a lot more calamitous! Are people just not looking, not paying attention, or is eyesight just getting worse?"

Statistix said: "Draconian rules reduce the need for responsibility, and not just on the road. It's the way we are told to do this, don't do that, that makes people lose the ability to distinguish when they need to make a responsible decision that will involve not only themselves but more importantly the others who will be impacted. Give people the opportunity to make those responsible decisions but by all means take action against those that abuse the system, instead of the current nannying action-taking against everyone who wavers from the obligatory path that is mapped out for them. People are much happier and more cooperative if they have choice."

Robbie added: "Lots don't look young old to many aggressive drives and bigger ones think they own the road better driving skills needed mot alot keep to speed limits there should speed cameras towns A55 especially."

Reactor replied: "Probably too busy looking around to check for speed cameras?"
