Incumbent Myers wins Democratic nomination for Vigo County coroner

May 7—In one of the most high-profile races in the Vigo County primary, Democratic incumbent Coroner Janie Myers beat out challenger John Fitzpatrick, receiving 3,172 votes (57.36%) to Fitzpatrick's 2,358 (42.64%).

In the Republican race for coroner, Travis Norris ran unopposed as a Republican and received 6,382 votes.

Myers, whose career has taken her from Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago and Tacoma, Washington, said, "I'm learning more about Terre Haute, where I live and learn and love this."

She lamented misinformation about the coroner's office that came out during primary campaigning.

"I need to clear that up," she said. "It's hurtful for the public not to deal with the facts. My office is open to answer any question."

In the race for Vigo County Clerk, LeAnna Moore, who previously served as deputy county clerk, received 3,963 votes (57.57%) to challenger Laureen Hoffman's 2,921 (42.43%).

Jack Kensell ran unopposed as a Democrat, and received 4,953 votes.

The clerk's seat is open in the general election as incumbent Republican Brad Newman is term-limited and cannot seek the office.

Running unopposed in the primary for auditor, Democrat Cheryl Loudermilk, the county's current deputy auditor, received 4,894 votes.

Republican Larry Hutchings also ran unopposed and received 6,553 votes.

In the race for Vigo County treasurer, Democrat Tona Bean, the county's chief deputy treasurer, surpassed rival Billy Joy, 3,681 votes (68.66%) to 1,680 (31.34%).

Republican incumbent Josie Swalls-Thompson ran unopposed and received 6,679 votes.

County recorder candidates ran unopposed. Republican incumbent Diana Winstead-Smith received 6,679 votes and Democrat Nancy Allsup, currently a member of the Vigo County Council, received 5,087 votes.

Out of 69,017 registered voters in Vigo County, 13,773 cast ballots, or 19.96%.

Of those, 8,029 were cast by Republicans (58.3%) and 5,744 by Democrats (41.7%).
