Indonesia's Ruang volcano erupts again

Indonesia's Mount Ruang volcano erupted on Tuesday for the second time in two weeks.

The volcano sent ash kilometres into the air, resulting in Indonesian authorities raising their alert status. Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) warned residents living on Tagulandang island, the island closest to the volcano, that a tsunami could be triggered by volcanic material collapsing into the ocean.

Indonesia's National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure, said it, "has again raised the status of Ruang Volcano to level IV or 'Watch' as of today, Tuesday (30/4) at 01.30 WITA. The increase in status was carried out after the volcano erupted again and released an eruption column reaching 2,000 meters from the top."

Tuesday's eruption follows eruptions earlier this month that forced evacuations and the closure of nearby Manado to close. That eruption also caused damage to some homes.

The volcanic island is about 100 km from Manado, the capital of North Sulawesi province. Authorities closed Manado's airport again on Tuesday, citing the possible spread of volcanic ash, according to an Instagram post. The airport will remain closed until Wednesday.
