International glass artist partners with Worcester Cathedral to craft memorial pieces

An internationally-renowned glass artist has collaborated with Worcester Cathedral to design hand-crafted in-memory pieces to honour lost loved ones.

Allister Malcolm, known for his appearances as a mentor on the TV series Make It at Market, has partnered up with the Cathedral to design a special edition of the pieces.

Cathy Sloan, fundraising director for the Cathedral, said: "We are so excited to be working with Allister whose work can be seen in galleries worldwide.

"Allister is well known for his glass art and for his appearances as a mentor on the TV series Make It at Market.

"Allister also shares our passion for the environment and sustainability making him the perfect partner for this project, as his studio moves towards increasingly sustainable practices."

The 'Perpetual Flame' pieces are for sale in support of the Cathedral.

Created using Mr Malcolm’s signature style of hot sculpting techniques, each unique sculpture was produced through intricate cane work, glittering gold and colour.

Mr Malcolm, who is based in Stourbridge, said: "I really enjoy working on projects that allow our glass to be appreciated by different audiences.

"It was an honour to be approached to develop something unique for the Cathedral.

"The idea of creating something inspired by the process of lighting a votive really appealed to me."

The Reverend Canon Dr Stephen Edwards, the interim Dean of Worcester, said: "Every day in the Cathedral hundreds of candles are lit as a sign of prayer, remembrance, and thanksgiving.

"Lighting a candle in memory of someone we have loved and lost is a meaningful way to remember and honour their life and the time we spent with them."

A selection of the pieces are currently on display in the Nave of the Cathedral.
