A fire which damaged a number of vehicles in Bristol yesterday (May 13) is believed to have been caused by 'accidental ignition'. A large fire broke out in an industrial estate in Patchway, damaging a number of vehicles.

Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue was first alerted to reports of a fire at a retail premises on Gloucester Road at 10.15am. When crews arrived, they found multiple vehicles 'well alight' and firefighters battled the fire for a number of hours.

A spokesperson for the fire service has confirmed this morning that the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental. It is not known how many vehicles were damaged, but pictures from the scene yesterday shows the devastation from the blaze.

One eyewitness told BristolLive they saw at least seven vehicles engulfed in the fire. They said: "Seven to 10 cars and vans up in flames".

As firefighters tackled the fire, officers from Avon and Somerset Police assisted with local road closures. The emergency response caused major traffic delays in the city until road closures were lifted at 12.55pm.

A statement from the fire service said: "Crews from Patchway, Southmead, Temple, Thornbury and Yate were called at 10:15 to reports of a fire at a retail premises off Gloucester Road, Patchway.

"On arrival, firefighters found multiple vehicles well alight and used three high pressure hose reels and three 45mm jets to extinguish the blaze. Thermal imaging cameras were used to check for and extinguish any remaining hotspots.

"Ten of our firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety. The cause of the fire has been determined as accidental ignition."
