Israel closes schools, again, as COVID-19 cases surge

Israel closed its schools on Thursday (September 17) ahead of a second nationwide lockdown in what leaders called a last resort to get a second wave of coronavirus infections under control.

Parents across the country, who had hoped to stock up on groceries or put in a final day of work before a three-week lockdown takes effect on Friday (September 18), were caught off guard when the government shut down the education system a day early.

The lockdown begins on the eve of the Jewish new year and extends throughout the main holiday season. Israelis will have to stay within 500 metres of their houses, but can travel to workplaces that will be allowed to operate on a limited basis.
