Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated a call on Tuesday for Palestinian civilians to move south for their own safety as the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) are fighting “in the heart of Gaza City”.
In a televised statement, Mr Netanyahu said there would be no ceasefire before Hamas released Israeli hostages.
“I’m calling on the citizens of Gaza: please go south. I know you’re already doing that. Complete the move to the south because Israel will not stop. There’s no entry of workers and there will be no ceasefire without our hostages being back home,” he said.
Meanwhile, the IDF are fighting “in the heart of Gaza City”, according to the head of the military’s southern command.
Major General Yaron Finkelman said the IDF was fighting in the “heart of terror” for the “first time in decades” and the operation was “complex and difficult”.
Troops are expected to begin marching through the streets of the capital this week, where they are expected to face Hamas operatives, according to local media.
It comes as the United Nations warned “no place” was safe in Gaza and said hundreds have been killed sheltering in UN buildings.

A British citizen in Gaza has described the desperate scenes at the Egyptian border that has opened for the first time since the Israel-Hamas war began.
Mohamed Ghalayni, a British-Palestinian scientist based in Manchester who was in Gaza visiting family when the war started, told The Independent he used precious fuel supplies to travel to the border to see if he or any of his family were on a list of permitted evacuees.

More than 200 Germans and dozens of Filipinos fled from the war-ravaged Gaza Strip into Egypt through the Rafah crossing.
Germany’s foreign minister Annalena Baerbock confirmed in a social media post that more than 200 German nationals and their family members have left the Gaza Strip.
Ms Baerbock thanked Egypt for its assistance in helping the Germans leave the besieged coastal enclave where more than 10,000 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military.
The 40 Filipinos were traveling to the Egyptian capital of Cairo, where they planned to take flights back to the Philippines, president Ferdinand Marcos Jr said in a video message on Wednesday.
Two Filipino doctors managed to leave the Gaza Strip into Egypt last week.“I hope the rest of our countrymen who also wanted to return home can also exit properly with their spouses and loved ones,” Mr Marcos added.
Canadian poet Rupi Kaur snubs White House over Israel support

Rupi Kaur, a renowned Canadian poet of Indian descent, has publicly declined an invitation to attend a Diwali event to be hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris at the White House on Wednesday.
In a statement posted to X (formerly known as Twitter), Ms Kaur wrote that she’d received her invitation “a few days ago” and remarked that she was “surprised this administration finds it acceptable to celebrate Diwali, when their support of the current atrocities against Palestinians represent the exact opposite of what this holiday means to many of us”.

Israeli ambassador says Ireland is not ‘politically neutral’ in Gaza conflict

The Israeli Ambassador in Dublin has said she does not believe Ireland is politically neutral in respect of the Israel-Hamas conflict, as she warned of a rising “wave of antisemitism” internationally.
Dana Erlich, who took up the Dublin role less than three months ago, said she was familiar with pro-Palestinian sentiment throughout Ireland and political parties.
However, she said she was “surprised” by the public reaction to October 7 and the ongoing conflict.
She said she did not hear protesters condemn Hamas or call for the release of hostages.
Asked if the perception of Ireland being pro-Palestinian meant it could play a role as an interlocutor in resolving the conflict, Ms Erlich said she did not know if Ireland “wants to play that part”.

Israel’s ground forces in the Gaza Strip aimed on Wednesday to locate and disable Hamas’s tunnel network beneath the enclave.
Israeli forces said on Tuesday that they have encircled the Gaza City – the territory’s largest town and Hamas’s main stronghold.
Chief Israeli military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said that Israel’s combat engineering corps was using explosive devices to destroy a tunnel network built by Hamas that stretches for hundreds of kilometres beneath Gaza.
Defence minister Yoav Gallant said Israel had “one target - Hamas terrorists in Gaza, their infrastructure, their commanders, bunkers, communications rooms”.
Aid trucks damaged in bombardment of Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross said two of its trucks were damaged when a convoy of its vehicles in Gaza came under fire.
The ICRC vehicles were hit as they were transporting vital medical supplies to hospitals and health facilities in the besieged enclave, the aid group said. A driver was lightly wounded.
“These are not the conditions under which humanitarian personnel can work,” said William Schomburg, the head of the ICRC sub-delegation in Gaza. Officials did not provide further details on the location of the trucks inside Gaza.

Sir Mark Rowley resisted pressure heaped on the force by politicians including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to try to block the gathering in London on Saturday.
In a statement on Tuesday, Sir Mark said intelligence surrounding the potential for serious disorder this weekend does not meet the threshold to apply to prohibit the march.
“The laws created by Parliament are clear. There is no absolute power to ban protest, therefore there will be a protest this weekend,” Sir Mark said.
“The law provides no mechanism to ban a static gathering of people. It contains legislation which allows us to impose conditions to reduce disruption and the risk of violence, and in the most extreme cases when no other tactics can work, for marches or moving protests to be banned.”

The censure resolution formally criticised Ms Tlaib for her comments after the 7 October attack on Israel wherein Hamas militants killed 1,400 people in Israel and took at least 230 hostages.
Ms Tlaib, one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress in 2019 and the House’s sole Palestinian-American member of Congress, has come under fire for saying that Israel was behind the bombing of the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital when US and Israeli intelligence said that a misfired Hamas rocket caused the destruction of the hospital.

Hamas has denied that Israeli forces were making any significant military gains or that they had advanced deep into Gaza City.
The Israeli military on Tuesday said they were fighting the militants “in the heart of Gaza City”, following a month of prolonged bombardment that has killed 10,300 civilians in besieged Gaza.
“They never give the people the truth,” Hamas spokesperson Ghazi Hamad.
He added that numerous Israeli soldiers were killed on Monday and “many tanks were destroyed”.

Red Cross says humanitarian convoy came under fire in Gaza City

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said a humanitarian convoy came under fire in Gaza City on Tuesday but was able to deliver medical supplies to Al Shifa hospital.
Two trucks were damaged and a driver was lightly wounded, the organisation said.
It said the convoy included five trucks and two ICRC vehicles and was carrying “lifesaving medical supplies to health facilities including to Al Quds hospital of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, when it was hit by fire.”
The group did not identify the source of the fire.

US President Joe Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a call on Monday that a three-day fighting pause could help secure the release of some hostages, Axios reported on Tuesday, citing two US and Israeli officials.
Citing the US official, Axios reported that under a proposal being discussed between the US, Israel and Qatar, Hamas would release 10-15 hostages and use the pause to verify the identities of all the hostages and deliver a list of names of the people it is holding.
In a statement on Monday, the White House said Biden and Netanyahu discussed “the possibility of tactical pauses to provide civilians with opportunities to safely depart from areas of ongoing fighting, to ensure assistance is reaching civilians in need, and to enable potential hostage releases.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Axios report.

A Jewish man in California has died after getting into a confrontation during dueling protests over the Israel-Hamas war, authorities said.Paul Kessler, 69, died at a hospital on Monday, a day after he was struck during pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations at an intersection in Thousand Oaks, a suburb northwest of Los Angeles, authorities said.
Witnesses said Kessler was involved in a “physical altercation” with one or more counter-protesters, fell backward and struck his head on the ground, according to a statement from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
An autopsy Monday said Kessler died from a blunt force head injury and it was homicide, according to the Sheriff’s Department, which said investigators hadn’t ruled out the possibility that the act was a hate crime.
On X, leader of the Knesset opposition Yair Lapid claimed Mr Kessler died “because he was a Jew”.
Paul Kessler was killed in Los Angeles because he was a Jew.

Zelensky cancels Israel visit over leaked plans

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky cancelled a planned visit to Israel today after news of his apparent trip was leaked to Israeli media over the weekend, according to reports.
Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel cited diplomatic sources as saying the Ukrainian president was still due to visit the country, but no date had been set.
“If President Zelensky comes, he will be welcomed with open arms,” an Israeli official was reported as saying. A Ukrainian diplomat previously told The Times that Mr Zelenskyy was “very disappointed” by the leak.

UAE to set up 150-bed field hospital in Gaza

The United Arab Emirates is to set up a field hospital in the Gaza Strip, it has been reported.
Five aircraft flew out of Abu Dhabi for Arish in northern Egypt carrying equipment and supplies for the 150-bed facility, WAM news agency said late on Monday.
An official contacted by AFP said there was no immediate information on how the equipment will be transferred to Gaza, where there is only one operational border point, the Rafah crossing near Arish.

The road allows those in the north to travel to the south, where IDF forces are not yet operating on the ground - although airstrikes are still occurring across the strip.

IDF tank attacks Lebanese territory, military says

An Israeli Defence Forces tank attacked Lebanese territory after it was attack by a “terrorist squad”, a military spokesperson said.
“A short time ago, an IDF tank attacked a terrorist squad in Lebanese territory that tried to launch an anti-tank missile towards Israeli territory near the Shatula area.
“Also, earlier today IDF forces attacked a position of the terrorist organisation Hezbollah, in order to remove a threat,” IDF spokesperon Daniel Hagari said.

Israel hints at extending ‘indefinite control’ over security in Gaza

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at extending “indefinite control” over security in Gaza as Israel ramps up its ground invasion into the region.
“I think Israel will for an indefinite period have security responsibility. We have seen what happens when Israel does not have the security responsibility,” he told ABC news, referencing the 7 October attack.
“When we do not have this security responsibility what we have is an eruption of Hamas terror on a scale we could not imagine.”
IDF secures 'Hamas military stronghold' inside Gaza

The Israel Defence Forces says it has secured a “Hamas military stronghold” inside the Gaza Strip.
It said in a statement the stronghold belonged to “the Hamas terrorist organisation in the northern Gaza Strip”.
“Furthermore, IDF troops located a number of Hamas terrorists who barricaded themselves in a building adjacent to the al Quds Hospital, and planned to carry out an attack on the forces from there.”
Anti-tank missiles, launchers, other weapons and “various intelligence materials” were reportedly found inside.
