The prime minister has been accused of stoking fear by one of the groups organising the pro-Palestine march on Remembrance Day.

Rishi Sunak branded the marches "disrespectful" and said said he would hold Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Mark Rowley “accountable” for his decision to greenlight the pro-Palestinian protests on Armistice Day.

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign tweeted: "The government is stoking up fears & playing politics when most British people support a #ceasefireNOW to prevent more indiscriminate killing of civilians in #Gaza, including 4500 children. We won't be deflected by their deeply irresponsible comments. See you Saturday in London."

The message came as Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer accused the prime minister of of “cowardice” for “picking a fight” with the Metropolitan Police over their decision to allow a pro-Palestinian demonstration to take place on Armistice Day.

Starmer tweeted: "The person the PM needs to hold accountable is his Home Secretary. Picking a fight with the police instead of working with them is cowardice."

The marches calling for a ceasefire come after the death toll in Gaza reached 10,000, including 4,000 children, since the violence escalated after Hamas killed more than 1,400 Israelis during the 7 October attacks.

Medical supplies, fuel, food and water are dwindling in the embattled enclave, with Israeli forces saying on Tuesday night that they had surrounded Gaza City.
