Charles Milligan (played by Kevin Mathurin), the village vicar, is left devastated after the sudden loss of his son. Official spoilers from the ITV soap indicate that things are about to get even more difficult for him.

In scenes to come, Caleb Milligan (Will Ash), discovers that the case surrounding Ethan Anderson's (Emile John) hit-and-run will be dropped. This news doesn't sit well with Charles, despite Manpreet Sharma's (Rebecca Sarker) attempts to comfort him.

Later on, Charles is seen drowning his sorrows at the local pub. Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) tells Caleb that Charles probably doesn't want to go home because it reminds him of Ethan.

Feeling sympathetic, Caleb decides to accompany Charles back home, surprising Ruby Milligan (Beth Cordingly).

The following morning, Charles wakes up and thanks Caleb for his kindness. While drinking coffee, he accidentally spills some on the rug.

As he cleans up, he finds an interesting invoice and takes it.

Later in the day, Charles offers to drive Caleb into Hotten. Despite initial reservations, Caleb accepts the offer against his better judgment, according to the Express.

On the road, Caleb is left confused when Charles suddenly becomes emotional, pulls over, and leaves the car.

Concerned, Caleb follows Charles into the woods as the vicar starts to reflect on Ethan.

Trying his best to comfort the mourning father, Charles begins to question his decision to drop the hit-and-run case.

However, the mood changes as Charles' eyebrows knit together and Caleb finds himself blamed for Ethan's tragic death.

Realising the situation has escalated, Caleb tries to return to his car but finds an increasingly angry Charles blocking his way.

When Charles presents the invoice he found in his house earlier, it appears to imply that Caleb may have been involved in the hit-and-run accident.

Caught in the thick of the situation, how will Caleb handle the vicar's escalating wrath and push for answers?

Unbeknownst to Charles, it was Ruby who was actually responsible for knocking down his son in an act of vengeance against Ethan.

Upset with Ethan for leaving her son Nicky (played by Lewis Cope) for dead which resulted in him falling into a coma, Ruby couldn't contain her anger.

Ethan later confessed to Ruby that he was aware she was the one who hit him but asserted they were now "square" because he didn't tip off the police about her.

Nonetheless, she ominously told him that the score wasn't even as her son still lay in hospital - she warned him that if her son didn't make it, she'd not only knock him down again but this time, he wouldn't be getting up.

Luckily, Nicky recovered but Ethan tragically succumbed to a brain aneurysm mimicking the circumstances of his grandfather Victor Anderson's (portrayed by Eddie Osei) demise.

But if Charles discovers the real circumstances behind the hit and run, will he hold them accountable for his son's untimely death?

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV.
