ITV's Vera could meet a tragic end in the heart-wrenching final episodes, as fans have spotted a significant 'clue' during filming that suggests DCI Vera Stanhope might die.

Brenda Blethyn, who has brilliantly portrayed the beloved character, is set to leave her role after the upcoming series. With only two more episodes of the ITV drama left, it remains uncertain how the show will conclude.

In a statement released last week, Brenda confirmed her departure and the end of the show. She expressed: "Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I'm sad to be saying cheerio. But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years."

The statement continued, the Mirror reports: "I'll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role.

"The producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I'm going to miss them, but I won't forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the north east and our fans worldwide."

The concluding two episodes will feature Vera working with her team, including DI Joe Ashworth (David Leon), to crack two more murder cases before time runs out.

However, one eagle-eyed fan, who observed the filming up north, has raised concerns among viewers after spotting a hint on set that suggests Vera might meet her end in the show's final episodes.

They shouted the actress, only to discover it was a stunt double sporting in Vera's famous coat and hat instead. Could this hint at a devastating end for the character?

If this were to happen, it would indeed be a heartbreaking conclusion. Fans are hopeful that the show might return again, either as a spin-off or even a prequel.

Sharing their thoughts, one fan wrote: "Maybe there'll be a spin-off series with Joe or Aiden leading the team," whilst a second added: "They are filming two more episodes this summer, so perhaps Vera retires and Joe takes over?" A third penned: "Joe's the man for the job," with another writing: "I would love a spin-off."
