The co-stars of an Apple TV series about a couple struggling to conceive have announced their own exciting baby news.

Rafe Spall and Esther Smith play Jason and Nikki in the streamer's sitcom Trying. It follows the pair as they turn to adoption after struggling to conceive themselves.

Rafe and Esther went public with their real-life romance in November 2022. And on Tuesday's Lorraine (May 14), a beaming Esther announced: "I've got a little bump."

Chatting to Lorraine in the ITV studio, the couple were promoting the upcoming fourth season of Trying. They said they can't wait to welcome their child into the world, and hope to continue with a fifth season of the Apple TV hit afterwards.

When asked if Esther's pregnancy could be woven into a potential series five plot, Esther said: "We hope there's another series." Rafe, whose film roles include the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy alongside Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, added: "We don't know yet."

Esther, whose other TV credits include the sitcoms Uncle and Cuckoo, continued: "We'll have a baby, and then we'll carry on, perhaps, with that [Trying]." Rafe added: "We're very excited."

Rafe already shares three children with his ex-wife, former Hollyoaks star Elize du Toit. The couple were married for 12 years before they split in 2022.

Rafe, the son of Harry Potter's Peter Pettigrew actor Timothy Spall, previously described how much he enjoyed working with Esther on set. Speaking to Filmhounds in July 2022, he gushed: "I get to hang out with Esther all day. We really get on. She's my favourite person I've ever done acting with."

He went on to tell Nerds That Geek: "People often comment on the chemistry that we have with each other. And I'm really pleased that people enjoy it, but… they won't enjoy it as much as we do."

Trying, which currently has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 93 percent, first released in 2020. When we last saw Nikki and Jason in season three, the court had approved their adoption of Princess and Tyler.

When we catch up with them again, the clan is now not only officially a family of four, but time has moved on six years. They seem happy, but Nikki and Jason begin to worry about Princess - now played by Scarlett Rayner - when she begins yearning for a reunion with her birth mother, putting their parenting skills to the test.

Trying's cast also includes Sian Brooke, BAFTA-winner Darren Boyd and Cooper Turner. Season four drops on Apple TV on Wednesday May 22.
