Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has extraordinarily suggested that some of the injured players at Old Trafford are actually fit to feature for the club.

United have been plagued by injury this season with more than 60 separate instances over the course of the campaign. Currently, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Tyrell Malacia, Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are all struggling in the treatment room.

After United lost 1-0 to Arsenal with a makeshift centre-back partnership of Jonny Evans and Casemiro, Rooney told Sky Sports that there are some players who could have featured but are instead focusing on the FA Cup final in a couple of weeks or next month's European Championships. "Well if they are [fighting to keep Ten Hag] I don’t think they are showing it very well," Rooney explained.

"I think the performances, there are some very good players in that squad and the performances are way below par. As we look at some of the injuries they have picked up, some of them players can play.

"Some of them injured players can play 100 per cent. You have got a European Championships coming up, an FA Cup final coming up… it is easy for players to stay out [of the firing line] and come back towards the final and get themselves ready for the European Championships.

"I have seen it myself over the years, I just think the players who have been injured, they are not filling themselves with any credit at the minute and the manager is going to take all the stick for it." United did welcome back the likes of Scott McTominay and Willy Kambwala back into their matchday squad this weekend while Ten Hag told the media this past week that Martinez had requested to play vs Arsenal but was not yet at full match fitness.
