Jack Butland to be named Rangers captain if James Tavernier exits Ibrox

Jack Butland is set to be named the new Rangers captain IF James Tavernier leaves the club.

Current skipper Tavenier is a target for ex-boss Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro-League side Al-Ettifaq, with Rangers bracing themselves for a summer bid from the Middle East. The right-back may find a life-changing mega-bucks move to Saudi too hard to resist in the coming weeks.

If Tavernier quits, Butland will be the club’s leader going into the new season. Record Sport revealed back in April the current skipper was a target for Gerrard in the Gulf State along with defensive partner Connor Goldson. The English keeper only signed last summer but has made a huge impact at the club – on and off the pitch.

Butland has impressed manager Philippe Clement with his leadership skills since arriving in Glasgow from Crystal Palace. Right-back Tavernier, meanwhile, is entering his testimonial season at Rangers but in 10 years at the club has only won three trophies.

He led them to a league title in 2021, the Scottish Cup in 2022 and the League Cup last term. The Englishman also wore the armband as they reached the 2022 Europa League Final in Seville. The 32-year-old has been a terrific servant to Rangers since joining for £200k from Wigan Athletic.
