Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly in talks to play a Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 villain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is eyeing up the role as classic Marvel villain Mysterio in the sequel to the Sony and Marvel film which is due for release next year.

While Gyllenhaal has never worked on a Marvel production before, he does have past links to Spider-Man, having previously been considered as a replacement for Tobey Maguire in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 when it was thought the actor may drop out of the second film.

Gyllenhaal also recently denied rumours he was the DCEU's next Batman, so talk about (home)coming full circle.

Mysterio was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and introduced into the comic book series in 1964.

His non-villain name is Quentin Beck and his back story portrayed him as a special effects expert who used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.

Since his original appearance, the villain has also crossed over into the Daredevil comics, although he has never appeared in any on-screen, live-action version of Spider-Man or Daredevil, although he would have been featured in the cancelled Spider-Man 4 of Tobey Maguire's Spidey tenure.

According to storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson, master of illusion Mysterio was intended as part of "a montage of C and D- list villains" in the film's opening. Mysterio has also appeared in Spider-Man: The Animated Series.

Spider-Man Homecoming 2 will see Tom Holland return to the role of Peter Parker and be the first of Marvel's Phase Four films, picking up immediately after where Avengers 4 leaves off.

It will also welcome back director Jon Watts and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is set to be released on July 5, 2019. Avengers: Infinity War is out now. Book tickets here.
