Exclusive: Jamelia hit by depression after daughters targeted over plus size comments

Jamelia has spoken out about the devastating time she faced following her controversial comments about plus sized clothes on ITV’s Loose Women.

The Superstar singer, 35, revealed the ordeal left not only her as a target of online abuse but also her two daughters’ 15-year-old Teja, and Tiani, aged 14.

Speaking to Yahoo! Celeb exclusively Jamelia said she ‘sunk into a big depression’ after her views on the TV panel were taken out of context.

The TV panelist stirred Loose Women viewers after she apparently said that obese women ‘should feel uncomfortable’ about their unhealthy size, and that high street stores should not be catering for them.

Talking about the backlash she said: “It was so hard to deal with it during the time of the headlines, I had people print my address, I had people post up where my daughters went to school and posting up pictures of my daughters and where to find them.

“I couldn’t defend myself but it was an experience that strengthened me and taught me to be a little more cautious and explain myself properly.”

Jamelia added: “It’s affected me personally and career wise and I hate that people will think of me that way and It did devastate me that people will think to associate it that with me.

”One of my core values is empowering people and insisting that everyone feels comfortable and happy.“

The Birmingham born presenter and singer was among the acts including Jason Derulo, Tinie Tempah, Rough Copy, Jamelia and Alesha Dixon that performed at an exclusive launch party – to celebrate the opening of Cape Verde’s first adult-only five-star hotels, in Llana Beach resort and beach club, Bikini Beach.

Speaking about her love for Cape Verde, she said: “I absolutely love it because we’re always sold this view of Africa that’s not just true.

‘It’s absolutely gorgeous and the people are lovely, I don’t want to go home.”

Despite being seen partying with her two teenage daughters at the launch parties, Jamelia insists she is still a bit of a stern mum.

She said: “I love Rihanna but my kids can’t listen to her, there’s certain songs I feel aren’t appropriate especially as young women. I feel like I need to surround them with women who represent them and what I want them to be.

“Obviously they’ll make their own choices but I feel as a child you’ll listen to music and be affected by it. I want them to be influenced in a positive way but in that being said I love Rihanna but I’m an adult and can listen to her music and be ratchet in the club.

“But I can leave the club and it won’t intrinsically be me whereas a child it affects them because they’re still creating their identities.”

2017 is looking to be a busy year for Jamelia, who is currently presenting a segment on This Morning featuring beauty for black women, writing a book, has some acting roles in the pipeline, and is filming a new documentary on injustice.

How does this she do it all! She must be some kind of superstar.
