James Cameron confirms “Avatar 3” release date amid 'hectic' 2-year post-production process

The Oscar-winning filmmaker also said he plans to become a New Zealand citizen to continue making movies in the region.

James Cameron has revealed the post-production schedule for his long-gestating Avatar 3 is a titanic undertaking.

The Oscar-winning director briefly discussed his work on the project at the 2023 Screen Production and Development Association conference in New Zealand, where he filmed Avatar: The Way of Water and the third Avatar film, confirming that the latter won't hit theaters for another two years.

"We're into a very hectic two-year post-production right now," he said. "So, it'll be Christmas '25."

The 69-year-old Canada-born filmmaker also told the audience at the event that he plans on becoming a citizen of New Zealand to make it easier to helm future productions in the region. "I plan on making all my films here, indefinitely," he said.

EW has reached out to Disney for comment.

Since the first Avatar became a nearly $3 billion global box office hit throughout 2009 and into 2010, the Titanic director's ambitious sci-fi series about the fictional world of Pandora (inhabited by the blue-hued Na'vi) spawned last year's The Way of Water sequel, which grossed a further $2.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales.

The four-time Oscar-winning series became so popular that Disney teamed with Cameron to work on an attraction themed to Pandora, which opened in 2017 at the Walt Disney World resort's Animal Kingdom property.
