Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said that Jurgen Klopp should forget about the Europa League and prioritise the Premier League title race after defeat against Atalanta.

The Reds were the favourites to win the tournament at the start of the night, but that may now have changed. Goals from Gianluca Scamacca and Mario Pasalic meant it was a night to forget for Liverpool at Anfield as they fell to a 3-0 loss in the first leg of their quarter-final clash.

It leaves the team with a mountain to climb when they visit Italy in the return leg next week. Liverpool did however come out as 5-0 winners on their last visit to Atalanta back in November 2020 - a repeat of that would see them turn the tie around.

Before that game comes around, concentration turns back to Premier League matters for Liverpool at the weekend. The Reds welcome Crystal Palace to Anfield on Thursday afternoon (2pm kick-off), ahead of the game, Liverpool are in second place in the table and only behind Arsenal on goal difference.

It’s the closeness of the title race added with the challenge ahead of the team in the second leg, that has led to Carragher believing that Klopp should make a decision ahead of the trip to Italy. He took to X (formerly Twitter) after full-time to deliver his assessment.

“Awful result & performance from Liverpool,” he wrote. “The only consolation about getting beat so heavily is Jurgen should play a full second string in the second leg & go all in for the league!”

Following next week’s second leg in Italy, Liverpool take on Fulham at Craven Cottage three days later. They are quickly back in action as they face Everton in the Merseyside derby just three days after that, both games could have a big say in the title race at the end of the season.
