Jamie Foxx is finally ready to share details about his medical emergency, nearly one year after the health scare.

On Sunday, the African American Film Critics Association held its annual luncheon honoring Black excellence at the 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards.

While accepting the AAFCA’s Producers Award for his company Foxxhole Productions, the Oscar winner, 56, reflected on how much more thankful he’s been since recovering from a medical complication that happened on April 11, 2023 while he was in Atlanta filming the movie Back in Action.

“I’m so thankful and I get emotional because it’s beyond the scope,” he said, telling everyone to “cherish life” and their loved ones. “I had some people in my life that really made sure I was here because it was dire straits.”

“Everybody wants to know what happened and I’m gonna tell you what happened but I got to do it in my way,” he added, sharing that he’ll finally discuss his health journey in an upcoming stand-up comedy special.

Back in December, Foxx also opened up about his health scare with an emotional award acceptance speech at the Critics Choice Association's Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements in Los Angeles.

“I want to thank everybody. I've been through something. I've been through some things,” Foxx said as he accepted the Vanguard Award for his performance in The Burial . “It's crazy, I couldn't do that six months ago. I couldn't actually walk too....," he added as he welled up with emotion.

Showing his appreciation for life, Foxx said, “It feels good to be here. I cherish every single minute now. It's different. It's different.”

“I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy, because it's tough when you almost... When it's almost over, when you see the tunnel,” he said at the time.

On April 12, 2023, Foxx’s daughter, Corinne, issued a statement on Instagram revealing that the actor was on the mend after facing a "medical complication" the day prior.

"We wanted to share that my father, Jamie Foxx, experienced a medical complication yesterday," shared Corinne in a statement written on behalf of the Foxx family.

"Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery. We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers," the statement read. "The family asks for privacy during this time."

On May 3, Foxx broke his silence on the topic for the first time, taking to Instagram to share an update and thank his followers for their support. Shortly after, his daughter gave another update on Foxx's health, revealing that he's out of the hospital and "recuperating."

Since then, Foxx has made several public appearances. According to a source, the actor even held a party to celebrate his recovery.

"Finally starting to feel like myself… it’s been an unexpected dark journey… but I can see the light…" Foxx told his fans on Instagram in August 2023.
