Walker and prequel series Walker: Independence have both received major updates regarding their futures on The CW.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the main show (starring Jared Padalecki as Texas ranger Cordell Walker) is returning for a shortened fourth season, consisting of 13 episodes, while Walker: Independence (which Padalecki co-produces) has come to an end after just one season.

Despite the ongoing popularity of Walker – it's the network's most-watched linear show – the spin-off could only generate 440,000 live same-day viewers for its finale, THR's report notes.

This news follows Independence co-producer Seamus Kevin Fahey's comments about the aftermath of season 1's finale cliffhanger, which saw Sheriff Tom Davidson (Greg Hovanessian) handed a knife by his dad.

"If we're lucky enough to explore more stories in this world, it would definitely be about that father-son dynamic, in the wake of everything that Tom did and everything that happened," he said.

"And how does Aunt Teresa fall in that mix? How do you take a character, who is more or less fearless in Tom Davidson, and kind of get to a point where he was cornered by everybody else on the call sheet? You finally see him sweating a little bit."

Hinting at how the story could have continued, Fahey went on to add: "But he made it this far, and how can you pull it off in just one scene where he's terrified of what comes next, just by a shadow alone, the presence of a father figure?

"That was an interesting way to end the season: What is a villain now scared of, and opening it up to a bigger threat and a bigger mystery."

Both Walker and spin-off Walker: Independence air on The CW in the US.
