The US actor, known for the role of Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, passed away in November at the age of 49.
His wife Tammie Frank told People that the pair had split but were in the process of getting back together when he took his own life.
She said: "My name is Tammie Frank, and my husband was Jason David Frank, who tragically lost his life to suicide just last week."
"I loved my husband, and we were trying to work through our problems," she said.
"His death comes as much a shock to me as anyone else."
Tammie said the star was "not without his demons" and had struggled with mental health issues and depression before, but that she had no idea he was thinking of taking his life.
She said it happened when the pair were on a short break together and deciding to rekindle their relationship.
Frank starred as Tommy in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers franchise in the 90s. He also appeared in other Power Rangers projects, including Dino Thunder.
Fans were devastated upon news of his death.
"Was gutted to hear this news when it broke," one tweeted. "MMPR was a big part of my childhood :( RIP, you legend."
Another wrote: "Can’t believe, genuinely gutted."
"Such a huge part of my childhood," said someone else. "Forever grateful for all of the great characters he’s given us & lessons he taught us. His love for being a Power Ranger & positive role model was really something special."
