We've already heard the opinions of the former Doctors themselves when it comes to Jodie Whittaker's casting as the new Doctor in Doctor Who, but now it's the former companions' turn to weigh in as Victoria star Jenna Coleman becomes the latest to reveal what she thinks of the casting.

Coleman played the role of Clara Oswald opposite Matt Smith's 11th Doctor and Peter Capaldi's 12th Doctor between 2012 and 2015, and now she's revealed that she's quite excited to see Whittaker make the role her own.

"Jodie is such a clever actress," she told The Telegraph. "I can't wait to see what she does. I just want to hear her speak. It's a really exciting time."

The actress was speaking to promote the upcoming second series of her hit ITV series Victoria and during the interview she also joked about how her new role is still managing to link her to former Doctor Who co-star Matt Smith thanks to his new role as Prince Philip on Netflix's The Crown.

"We tried to work out what relationship we had in fictional life to one another," she added. "We think I'm technically his great, great grandma."

Earlier this week, the airdate for the second series of Victoria was revealed, and we'll be heading back to 1840s Britain when it returns to ITV on Sunday, August 27 at 9pm, where it'll go head-to-head with the BBC's new series Strike.

And while it remains to be seen what performs better in the ratings, it seems Jenna's new series has a royal edge at least, with the actress admitting that she's heard some feedback from the modern royals about the series.

"I was told that they thought it feels accurate," she added to The Telegraph.

Victoria returns to ITV on August 27, while Jodie Whittaker will maker her Doctor Who debut in the Christmas special 'Twice Upon a Time' later this year on BBC One.
