Jennifer Lawrence says she fully expected her latest movie mother! to be one of the most divisive of the year.

The latest film from director Darren Aronofsky has caused controversy like no other in recent memory for its gruesome violence and, depending on who you talk to, alienating story.

Despite earning solid reviews from many of the top critics (including Digital Spy), mother! flopped at the US box office and received a Cinemascore of F from moviegoers in its first weekend of release.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence said she was "not at all" surprised that mother! has drawn polarising reactions thus far.

"The people who love it love it and want to see it another time," Jennifer said. "The people who don't like, absolutely despise it."

The actress continued: "There is no middle ground. We knew that it was divided. That's what's so exciting - everybody is going to feel something.

"It's going to create a conversation. It's going to create a controversy. Nobody is going to leave not getting something from it."

Lawrence went on to credit Aronofsky as "the bravest, certainly the most controversial" filmmaker of his era, and admitted that the physical toll of mother! spurned her from ever making another film like it.

"I don't regret it. I'm happy I did it," she said. "If I had to do it again? If there was a mother! sequel? No. I wouldn't be able to do it again. I did it once and I gave it my all."

As the backlash towards the film continues to mount, studio Paramount released a statement defending Darren Aronofsky's vision as "very audacious and brave".
