Jeremie Frimpong reacts to Leverkusen Bundesliga triumph as ex Celtic star helps create history

Jeremie Frimpong says it "still doesn't feel real" after helping Bayer Leverkusen romp to the Bundesliga title for the first time.

The 23-year-old joined the club in a £11million switch from Celtic in January 2021 and has been an essential part in manager Xabi Alonso's side that have been crowned champions of Germany with five games to spare after smashing Werder Bremen 5-0 on Sunday. The pacey wing back has already been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United ahead of the summer transfer window, with Hoops bosses eyeing up a bumper transfer windfall having inserted a sell on clause into the deal that took him to Leverkusen.

Frimpong - who has chipped in with an impressive eight goals and eight assists in 27 league games - was interviewed shortly after his team's unprecedented triumph, with Leverkusen also closing in on an invincible season, having not tasted defeat in their first 29 matches. The Dutchman admits that the feeling hasn't quite sunk in yet as he summed up the scenes of jubilation inside the dressing room.

Speaking to reporter Bundesliga English's Archie Rhind-Tutt, he said: "Unbelievable. It still doesn't feel real and hasn't hit me yet. I am out of words.

"Today was a special day for us as we knew a win would give us the league. We were extra motivated and the coach (Alonso) didn't even need to give us a speech because we were all excited. We got the job done and are champions of the Bundesliga, What can I say?

"Everybody is loving it in there. The coach tried to drench me, Edmond Tapsoba tried to drench me. I’ve come here to hide!"

Leverkusen are in the hunt for a historic treble with Alonso and Co in the box seat to reach the Europa League semi-finals after a 2-0 first leg win in Germany over West Ham ahead of their return showdown. The newly crowned champions are also in the DFB-Pokal final.
