Workers With Physically Demanding Jobs Should Have Lower Retirement Age, Jeremy Corbyn Says

Surprise Labour Leadership candidate, Jeremy Corbyn has called for a flexible pension age.

The dark horse of the leadership contest made this statement to help out those who have physically demanding jobs such as firefighters and paramedics.

Jeremy Corbyn wrote in a Telegraph op-ed: ‘Some people will be happy to work longer, others not.

‘But living longer doesn’t mean we are able to work longer in physically demanding jobs like that of the firefighter, police officer or paramedic.’

‘So we need a flexible pension age that allows people to work for as long as they want to, while also recognising that for many people the nature of their work, their health, or their disability may not allow that.’

The pension age is a growing issue as the Independent reports - the number of people over the age of 65 will increase by 51% in the next 20 years.

The UK retirement age is currently linked by legislation to the average life expectancy and the Department of Work and Pensions have suggested it could rise up to six months each year.
