Phillip Schofield found himself getting told off by Downton Abbey star Jim Carter after he grilled him about his wife’s part in The Crown.

The presenter had already asked the actor about the Downton film sequel during their chat on ITV’s This Morning.

He then moved on to a question about Carter’s wife Imelda Staunton taking over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in the hit Netflix series – and ended up getting a bit of a scolding.

“What about Imelda’s next big do in The Crown?” asked Schofield.

Looking amused, Carter replied: “Honestly, shut up!”

The 72-year-old went on: “Well she is going to be in Downton we think, you know, so that’s good, and then The Crown's coming up later in the year, again, allegedly."

The actor then rapidly shifted the conversation on to more mundane things, telling Schofield and his co-host Holly Willoughby that he and Staunton had had a busy morning turning their mattress.

The unexpected revelation had both presenters in fits of laughter, with Willoughby declaring it “amazing”.

Elsewhere in the interview, Schofield probed Carter about the new Downton film.

The actor confirmed he had seen a script but avoided letting any details slip as he told the presenter: “I’m under instructions here Phillip!”
