Remember when Ellen DeGeneres delivered pizza to Hollywood's biggest stars at the Oscars a few years ago? Jimmy Kimmel just topped her.

Let's face it – the Academy Awards are WAAAAAY too long and even uber-svelte Hollywood superstars get hungry after an hour or two of acceptance speeches, musical numbers, more acceptance speeches, movie highlights and yet more acceptance speeches.

Luckily, this year's Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel was looking out for Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling and all of the rest of the Hollywood elite desperate for a snack.

"How you guys holding up – are you hungry?" he asked. "Is there anything anyone needs? This is a show about the movies and you really can't have the movies without candy – it's un-American.

"Yeah popcorn too – but we don't have that! Close your eyes and wish very hard! Little bags of Red Vines and Junior Mints will be raining down on you from the sky. Time to find out how well those Spanx work!"

And..... voila!

Yes, he dropped actual sweeties from the ceiling so that Michael Shannon could have a mid-Oscars snack. Nobody seemed more excited than Best Actor nominee Casey Affleck – as you can see below:

We haven't seen anyone this jubilant since the Democratic National Convention...

The snack rain was such a hit that it gave Kimmel an idea: "Next year we should give out the awards this away!"

While he didn't open the Oscars tonight with any other food-related gags, he did dish out some hilarious zingers for Mel Gibson, Donald Trump and Meryl Streep and took down his arch-enemy Matt Damon!
