Jodie-Centric Daria Spinoff Starring Tracee Ellis Ross Not Moving Forward

Jodie Landon’s solo adventure has hit a snag.

MTV is not moving forward with the animated film Jodie, a spinoff of the beloved Daria series which would have starred Tracee Ellis Ross (black-ish, Girlfriends), our sister site Deadline reports.

What’s more, an MTVE Studios spokesperson says they are “fully supportive” of Ross, who also executive-produced, and creator Grace Edwards (Insecure, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) shopping the movie elsewhere.

First announced in 2018 as the series Daria & Jodie, the show evolved to solely focus on Jodie, with Ross joining the animated project in 2019. The proposed offshoot was ordered to series at Comedy Central in 2020 before settling as a film.

Jodie would have followed Daria’s former schoolmate “as she comes into her own and enters the workplace in her first post-college job in tech.” Other former students of Lawndale High would have also appeared.

A previous statement from MTV Studios gave some insight into what the spinoff would have looked like: “What Daria did for showing how inane high school was for Gen X, Jodie will do for exploring the trials and tribulations of a first job for a new generation. The series will satirize workplace culture, Gen Z struggles, the artifice of social media and more. With themes of empowerment along gender and racial lines, explorations of privilege, and a wicked sense of humor, Jodie will shine a light on the personal and professional issues young Black women face today.”

The OG animated series Daria ran for five seasons (1997–2002) on MTV.
