Our first look at Peaky Blinders star Joe Cole in Channel 4's upcoming drama Pure has arrived, and it's a long way from post-war Birmingham.

Joe will play Charlie in the upcoming series, a recovering porn addict who's navigating life with nothing but an old-school flip phone, Sex Addicts Anonymous, and a set of new friends each with their own foibles.

The drama, which has been billed as refreshingly honest and deliciously funny, follows the story of Charly Clive's Marnie, who's living with a form of OCD nicknamed 'Pure O', where her obsessions often take the form of intrusive – and sexual – thoughts.

Writer Kirstie Swain has promised the original series, which is based on Rose Cartwright's acclaimed memoir, will offer "a female voice to the often silent story of mental health."

Channel 4's commissioning editor, Manpreet Dosanjh, called the six-part series Pure "an outrageously funny and painfully honest show".

"In Marnie, Kirstie Swain has created an unforgettable and utterly lovable character who navigates the challenges of her mental health with a uniquely goofy charm.

"Pure is an outrageously funny and painfully honest show which will speak to anyone who has ever wondered who they are and where they belong," she said, adding that Channel 4 was "thrilled" to be working with such a "talented" cast and crew.

Pure is expected to air in early 2019 on Channel 4.
