Summer is almost here, but Joel Kim Booster has no plans to revisit Fire Island — at least on screen.

Kim Booster, 36, who wrote and starred in the breakout 2022 LGBTQ+ film, says he focused on other projects rather than a Fire Island follow-up.

"If the idea of a sequel comes to me, I will in a heartbeat dive back into that world and those characters," Kim Booster told PEOPLE exclusively at the Gold Gala earlier in May. "But I'm not going to reverse-engineer and force out a sequel just for the sake of it. Because I don't think people really know what they want when they say that.

"There's a lot of really bad examples of how a rom-com sequel can go, and I don't want to fall victim to that," he continued. "For me, I want to continue to make movies and shows and continue to cast the same people."

The film Fire Island, which starred Kim Booster, Bowen Yang, Conrad Ricamora, James Scully and Margaret Cho, followed a group of gay friends finding summer love at the popular LGBTQ destination. It earned two Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Kim Booster tells PEOPLE he's hard at work on his next feature.

"Right now I'm plugging away with my movie that's set up with Searchlight."

The writer/actor shared more when speaking with people at the LA LGBT Center Gala on May 18.

"What I will say about the script and the story is that I knew that whatever I did next would be compared and contrasted to Fire Island for better or worse, and I wanted to do something really different. I think it's a much different movie and tone and scope than Fire Island, but still really funny and really true to my life and sort of ripped from the headlines of my own relationship. So I'm really excited to share with people."

In the meantime, Kim Booster is promoting season 2 of the Apple TV+ show Loot, which stars Maya Rudolph. "I'm so proud of the season," the actor said of the comedy, which just aired its season finale.
