John Barrowman has shared the advice he gave to Phillip Schofield when the TV host publicly came out as gay earlier in the year.
Schofield first came out in a now-deleted Instagram post shortly before appearing on This Morning to discuss his statement with friend and co-star Holly Willoughby. Shortly afterwards, he received some words of encouragement from Barrowman.
When asked if he was proud of his Dancing On Ice co-star for coming out, 53-year-old Barrowman said: "Yes, I’ve known Phillip for years and I’d never imagined those headlines. I’m not saying I hadn’t thought about it, but that’s none of my business."
The Doctor Who star continued to OK! Magazine: "I’ve met his wife, who is lovely. I feel for her because although Phillip is out and living his truth, he loves his family so much. I had a chat with him, the night it all came out in the press, in his dressing room and I saw his face. It’s a face I’ve had before – upset, afraid and sad to be hurting other people.
"I said to him, ‘It will get better, the people around you who love you will understand. You’ll get through it.'"
Schofield, 58, has been married to wife Stephanie since 1993 and the pair share two adult daughters. Meanwhile, Barrowman has been married to husband Scott Gill since 2013 after entering into a civil partnership in 2006.
Schofield has announced he will be releasing an autobiography in October.
He shared in a post to Instagram: “After being asked many times, and after many years of wanting to, I have written my autobiography.
“In 2017 I wrote the first chapter and I sent it to a few friends and they said, ‘Oh my God you have to write this.’ And I knew I couldn’t and you know why.”
On what he will cover in the book, the 58-year-old said: “I will take you behind the scenes of my life and my career and my family and friends and the ups and downs there have been. Lots of up, lots of fun, but some really very, very emotional times as well.”
