John Hume's sons to take on 700km challenge in France for Children in Crossfire

John Hume Jr and his brother Aidan, sons of the late John and Pat Hume, are set to cycle 700km to raise money for the Derry charity Children in Crossfire.

The two men paid tribute to the Children in Crossfire founder Richard Moore as they looked ahead to the daunting Paris to Nice cycle.

Richard Moore, who was blinded at the age of 10 by a rubber bullet as he walked past an army lookout in Derry in 1972 on his way home from school, established the international development charity Children in Crossfire in 1996.

Since then, the Derry-based charity has raised millions to help people in countries such as Malawi, Tanzania, Gambia and Ethiopia.

Aidan Hume said: "“I have a long-standing connection with Children in Crossfire, due to my great respect for Richard Moore and the work the charity does."

He and his brother John Jr are set to take on the Paris2Nice cycle challenge over six days between September 6 and 12.

"Cycling from Paris to Nice will be no mean feat for us, but we are excited to take it on and enthused to be raising funds to support education, healthcare, water and nutrition programmes for very vulnerable children in Ethiopia and Tanzania," Aidan said.

Children in Crossfire Chief Executive, Richard Moore said: “We are delighted that Aidan and John are fundraising for us. Everyone in Derry knows the great esteem in which the Hume family are held, so to have their support means a great deal to us.

"They are certainly following in their mother and father’s footsteps, taking action to improve the lives of those with least in our world."

He added: “As a regular cyclist myself, I admire them for taking on such a difficult challenge. They will face quite a lot of mountainous terrain over the six days, so every penny they raise will be hard-earned. Children in Crossfire will invest it in life-changing programmes for children experiencing deep disadvantage and profound poverty. I thank them for their great effort and kind goodwill.”
