A John Lewis home insurance advert featuring a young boy in a dress was praised by singer Stevie Nicks on Thursday after an online row.

The retailer has produced a short commercial, called Let Life Happen, which aired this week on YouTube and during the breaks of Great British Bake Off on Channel 4.

It features a boy in bright make-up wearing a striped T-shirt over a blue dress dancing around his home causing chaos, smearing paint on the walls and throwing glitter into the air.

Some social media users appeared to take offence to the boy’s outfit, accusing the retailer of “agenda pushing”.

But others, including singer Stevie Nicks whose song Edge of Seventeen was used for the clip, were positive.

“Love this!” Nicks tweeted, re-posting the video on social media.

John Lewis said the advert was a “dramatic, fictional story” that updated their successful 2015 insurance advert.

It comes as the retail giant will be preparing to release this year’s Christmas advert.

In previous years, they have won the hearts of the UK with their own character excitable Edgar the dragon and one advert starring Elton John.
