John Wick 5 is in early development

Production has been confirmed on a fifth John Wick film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate chair Joe Drake teased John Wick 5 during a recent earnings call. He added that the studio is currently working on several additions to the franchise, including Ana De Armas' upcoming spin-off movie Ballerina.

"What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We're in development on three others, including [John Wick] five and including the television series, The Continental, which will be airing soon," Drake said.

"We're building out the world, and when that five movie comes, it will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we're starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick."

Released earlier this year, John Wick: Chapter 4 proved to be a huge success at the box office, grossing over $363 million globally.

However, the news of a fifth outing may come as a surprise to some fans given the way the fourth film ended.

Spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4 follow.

Chapter 4 wrapped up with Keanu Reeves' titular character seemingly succumbing to his injuries after being left fatally wounded.

The film didn't explicitly confirm Wick's demise, though, instead hinting at the possibility that the assassin could have faked his death in order to quietly live out the rest of his days.

Director Chad Stahelski previously touched on John Wick's ambiguous fate, saying that the character had "found a way to be at peace".

"What's the only way John could have gotten out? He's got to make everyone think he's dead, or he has to be dead, or he has to kill off a part of his persona," he said.

"However you want to take that, that's cool with us."

John Wick: Chapter 4 is in cinemas now and will arrive for digital download later this month. The previous John Wick movies are available to buy or rent on Prime Video, plus DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
