Johnny Depp thanked fans for their "trust" after scooping the Favourite Movie Icon Prize at this year's People's Choice Awards.

The actor - who infamously split from Amber Heard last year - was recently named the most overpaid actor of 2016, but that didn't stop him from impressing fans on screens, earning a much more favourable title in the form of the Movie Icon Prize.

He's already won the accolade a bunch of times, but Depp addressed the public in a grateful acceptance speech, saying he had attended the ceremony "for you, the people, who through whatever good times or bad have stood by me and trusted me".

"You've graciously invited me here once again tonight," he said. "I appreciate that so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate that.

"I was very deeply affected by the kindness of your recognition and by your well wishes to my family and myself, which is why it's especially meaningful for me to be here in front of you to say thank you."

Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May and was later granted a temporary domestic violence restraining order against the actor. The couple reached a settlement in August, when Heard withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order and the case was dismissed with prejudice, meaning Heard can no longer refile it.

Depp has staunchly denied any and all allegations of domestic violence, and his friends and family all publicly showed their support to the actor.

The couple's divorce was finalised earlier this month, and both have apparently signed confidentiality agreements which effectively bar them from discussing the relationship publicly, including on social media.

Depp is set to reprise his role as Gellert Grindelward in the sequel to JK Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, while Captain Jack Sparrow returns later this year in the next Pirates of the Caribbean, so 2017 seems to be shaping up much more nicely than his 2016.
