Johnny Marr and The Charlatans treat Scarborough Open Air Theatre to a night of indie classics
Johnny Marr and The Charlatans delivered an evening of indie classics when they co-headlined the latest summer fun at Scarborough Open Air Theatre.
Saturday evening’s festivities began with a support set from Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes. The blonde haired Tim Burgess then brought The Charlatans on to the stage for a set which included So Oh, The Only One I Know, Come Home Baby, North Country Boy, One To Another and The Only One I Know.
Johnny Marr later made his first appearance of the evening accompanying The Charlatans for cult classic Weirdo. Then Marr’s set consisted of his solo hits alongside classics from his legendary band The Smiths.

The Scarborough audience were treated to Bigmouth Strikes Again, Panic, This Charming Man and How Soon Is Now among other iconic songs. The masterful guitarist impressed the thousands in attendance.
For many, the highlight of the night was when Burgess, returning the favour, reemerged to provide vocals for Electronic’s Getting Away With It. Electronic, of course, being the supergroup Marr was in with New Order’s Bernard Sumner and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys.
Before taking his bow, Marr even provided a cover of Iggy Pop’s The Passenger for good measure. Saturday’s festivities was yet another memorable night in Scarborough Open Air Theatre’s 2024 summer season.
