Today is Father's Day (June 17) and generally, this can either be a joyous celebration of a strong relationship or a nostalgic, teary event. For the much-loved comic performer Johnny Vegas, it appears to be the latter.

Johnny appeared on Loose Women last year discussing his father, Laurence Pennington's battle with and eventual loss to cancer. Although he admitted to struggling with the notion of grief in that particular interview, today, Vegas posted an emotional message on his Twitter account.

It reads: "Wrote this on the anniversary of my dear Dad's passing. Think it's time to share it now. Not for platitudes, just because if anyone else is in this space, time does heal, their smile gradually gives you strength, their qualities live on in you x."

In his aforementioned interview, the 46-year-old shared: "I keep saying to friends I haven't had The Cry yet. If I'm really honest, I think I'm angry with him for going as quickly as he did. I don't accept his death. I feel guilty that I don't think about him on a daily basis, but it's only because I don't want to accept that he's gone.

"We had a very lucky period of about 20 years where we didn't lose anyone, and I think you get into a frame of mind that they're going to be around forever. And then when it happens, there's just a gap that you can't fill."
