Jude Bellingham has made a peculiar claim on social media following Real Madrid's win over Manchester City. The Spanish giants defeated Pep Guardiola's side on penalties at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening, booking themselves a place in the Champions League semi-finals.

Julian Alvarez put Manchester City ahead in the shootout before Luka Modric fluffed his lines. Despite establishing an early foothold, Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic both failed to convert from 12 yards, while Bellingham and Lucas Vazquez clawed back a lead for Real Madrid.

Phil Foden and Ederson pulled the reigning champions level, but Antonio Rudiger put the final nail in the coffin to wrap up the tie. After the game, the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder uploaded a celebratory post on Instagram which raked in over three and a half millions likes in under 12 hours.

Bellingham posted a selection of photos from the clash, with Vinicius Junior and Federico Valverde showing their support in the comment section. While the Englishman's post received a lot of love from Los Blancos supporters, City fans spotted his peculiar caption.

"Against the odds. We’re Real Madrid," he wrote. Strangely enough, Real headed into the second leg level on aggregate, they also secured an early lead and trailed just once in the penalty shootout.

Nevertheless, Bellingham was certainly chuffed with the win and Carlo Ancelotti's side will now face Bayern Munich in the next round. Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, he said: "I could never dream of it, how it’s started.

"Not just because of the performance and the goals, but just feeling you get playing for the club. It’s just that feeling every day you put the badge on and you are so grateful to be there. Long may it continue and hopefully more nights like these."

When about Ancelotti’s impact on the team, Bellingham added: "Our biggest strength is that he finds a way to let of the boys play with freedom. Some teams are a bit more structured in terms of their passing styles and patterns of play and it’s really interesting to watch and it’s difficult to play against, but one of our biggest strengths is that we are so off the cuff.

"As a man he fills you with calmness and confidence. Before the game I caught him yawning and I said ‘boss are you tired?’ and he said ‘yeah, you need to go and excite me out there’. That’s the kind of confidence and calmness he brings."
