K-Pop fans drown out racist ‘white lives matter’ hashtag with clips of favourite artists
K-Pop fans have helped drown out a racist hashtag on Twitter by flooding it with clips of their favourite artists.
As protests continue across the US in the wake of the death of George Floyd, the K-Pop community took it upon itself to ensure that the #whitelivesmatter hashtag wouldn’t be used to amplify the racist messages that typically accompany it.
To that end, K-Pop fans have been using the hashtag and attaching it to videos of artists performing on stage.
Specifically, many have been sharing fancams, ie close-up footage of a member of a specific band during a show.
Some have accompanied the videos with messages such as “We don’t stan racism” or “Say no to racism, say yes to fancam”.
The move has been met with widespread approval on Twitter, where many users have thanked K-Pop fans for the initiative.
“We should all appreciate the Kpop stans right now. We love you,” one person wrote.
“Seeing Kpop fans flooding #WhiteLivesMatter with fan cams made my day,” someone else tweeted.
Floyd, a black man, died aged 46 on 25 May in Minneapolis, Minnesota after a white police officer knelt on his neck.
The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
