K-pop star Jonghyun's funeral attended by 10,000 fans
An estimated 10,000 fans have visited K-pop star Jonghyun’s funeral hall following his suicide on 18 December, with officials being forced to restrict visiting hours due to the high volume of people making the journey to see the 27 year old in his temporary resting place.
The funeral hall was held at the Asan Hospital in Seoul, which can not cope with the high volume of visitors and this is only the second time that it has been used in this situation.
An official spoke out about the decision to limit visiting hours, explaining: “We decided to accept visitors until 8pm. 8:00 pm. We promise that the consultation time will be limited to eight hours at the request of the bereaved family.”
Jonghyun’s body has since been laid to rest in a private funeral service, which has concluded three days of mourning.
Only close relatives attended the ceremony, with SM Entertainment saying in a statement: “Jonghyun’s burial ground will remain private”, however, fans lined the streets to pay their respects to the star.
Previously, Jonghyun’s former SHINee bandmates, Onew, Minho, Key and Taemin greeted fans at the funeral hall.
Jonghyun struggled with depression and took his own life earlier this week, with the alarm being raised when his sister received a concerning ‘goodbye’ message from her brother and filed a police report.
