Kaaba Site Empty During Tarawih Prayers on First Night of Ramadan

Islam’s holiest shrine, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, was seen empty of worshipers during Tarawih prayers on the first night of Ramadan as the country has suspended entry to the iconic mosques in Mecca and Medina to control the spread of COVID-19.

In a rare sight, the area around the Kaaba – the building at the center of the Great Mosque in Mecca and the most sacred site in Islam – can be seen empty in the video, filmed on April 23, while a sheikh is heard performing Tarawih prayers. Credit: Wael Al-Ahmadi via Storyful
