Karen Gillan is back as the formidable Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 – out this week – and when we sat down with her to chat about the film, we obviously couldn't resist sneaking in one question about Doctor Who...

Specifically, with Peter Capaldi departing the show this Christmas, does she have any thoughts on who should be the next Doctor?

Amy Pond's alter ego told us that she's "open" to a female Doctor – and she even has some (very interesting) ideas about who new showrunner Chris Chibnall should cast.

Karen, of course, starred opposite Matt Smith from 2010-2012, making one final guest appearance for Smith's final episode in 2013.

Both Capaldi and current series boss Steven Moffat will be exiting Doctor Who this Christmas, in a festive special also rumoured to be starring David Bradley as the first Doctor.

There's been no official word yet on who's replacing Capaldi, though a number of actresses are riding high at the top of bookies' lists.

One favourite, Maxine Peake, ruled herself out of taking up the keys to the TARDIS – while another, Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge, remained coy on the subject.

Chibnall himself isn't giving anything away either – though he's insisted he'll be staying away from "gimmick" casting, so anyone still holding out for a David Tennant comeback will probably end up disappointed.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opens in the UK on Friday (April 28), and in the US on May 5.
