Kate Beckinsale Pays Tribute to Her Late Dad on 45th Anniversary of His Death at Age 31: 'How I Miss You'
The actress's father Richard Beckinsale died of a heart attack when she was only 5 years old, in 1979
Kate Beckinsale is thinking of her late father.
On Tuesday, the actress shared a carousel of photos featuring her dad, Richard Beckinsale, along with her mother, Judy Loe, and a younger version of herself as she marked the 45th anniversary of Richard’s death. He was just 31 when he died in 1979 of a massive heart attack.
“The day you died comes round so suddenly even when I’m expecting it,” Kate, 50, began her post. “This is my first year without any father figure at all for a long long time. How I miss you.”
She also reflected on the recent loss of her stepfather, Roy Battersby, as she continued in the caption, “How familiar this falling through an abyss. How horribly like home falling with no one to catch you feels. I hope your energies have met.”
Kate added of Richard, “I’m so grateful to have had your love. I feel it, like an echo. X.”

The anniversary of Richard’s death comes just two months after Kate's stepfather died suddenly following “a brief period of illness.”
She announced the news in January, writing in an Instagram Story post, "It is with great sorrow that the family of film and television director Roy Battersby announce the news of his recent death after a brief period of illness. He passed away peacefully on 10 January 2024, in Los Angeles surrounded by family, aged 87.”
The Underworld star followed the statement with another post as she admitted she had “no words yet” for the loss: “I fought for you with everything I had. Oh Roy I am so sorry I lost.”
When the actress’s father Richard died, she was just 5 years old. In 2019, on the 40th anniversary of his death, she wrote on Instagram, “40 years is a lot of missing. Thank you so much to everyone who has been kind. Lots of love xx.”

In 2022, Kate opened up about the grief she feels as she shared some sweet family photos with Richard and a photo of the front page of The Mirror newspaper following the news of his death.
“I don’t remember what not missing him feels like. It is part of me, like my blood. Always aware of how life can shatter. May all the daddies, everywhere, come home safe,” she wrote in the caption. “How much love you brought x.”
Kate followed in her father's footsteps with her acting career, as Richard was a notable TV and film actor in the U.K. prior to his death. His debut role was on the long-running British soap Coronation Street in 1969, and he went on to star in Porridge and Rising Damp on the BBC.
"I cannot stress to you enough how famous he was," Kate said of her dad on The Howard Stern Show in 2021. "He was in two or three of the most iconic comedies of the period and everybody loved him."
She added of the "really, really intense" days following Richard's death, "I remember confusing when John Lennon died and when my dad died because people were standing in the street with the evening paper sobbing on both occasions, and I can't remember which version of that is which because they were so similar."
